Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year!

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is gearing up for yet another school year and we cannot wait to welcome our students back. As the first day of school is approaching quickly, we know that many students, parents and guardians may have questions regarding the upcoming year. We want you to know that we are listening, and are here to help. That is why we are launching the KCKPS Back to School Guide. Below you will find a list of information and resources where you can explore all things back to school.

Important Dates

August 10-12^th: Family Advocacy Days

Tuesday, August 16^th: All remaining students return (7^th - 8^th Grade, 10^th - 12^th Grade)

More Back-to-School Information

School Supplies

Early childhood through 12th-grade students will receive their pencils, pens, notebooks, binders, crayons, scissors, and index cards on the first day of school. Some age groups will also receive earbuds. The only purchase that parents or guardians are asked to make is:

Backpacks: all age groups
Pencil Box: Early Childhood-5^th Grade

Transportation

How do I know if my student is eligible to ride the bus?

USD 500 offers bus transportation for all eligible riders as per District Policy. Eligibility measurement is determined along public roadways.

Elementary Eligibility

District 500 distance requirement for Elementary student is 8/10 of a mile. Elementary students who do not qualify under District Policy are permitted to walk to the nearest regular bus stop as long as they are not crossing a major street to get to a bus stop.

Secondary Eligibility

District 500 distance requirement for High School / Middle School student is 1.5 mile. Students that do not qualify under District Policy are not permitted to ride the school bus, and will be considered a non-transport student.

When will I know my child’s bus number, route and times?

Transportation letters were mailed on Friday, August 5th. Parents or guardians should have their information no later than August 9^th or 10^th. Parents/Guardians can also call the schools and/or transportation for bus information.

Does my child still need a bus ID?

Yes.

If my child has lost their bus ID, how can I get them a new one?

Replacement cost for new card is $20. After the $20 replacement fee has been received by the school, the school notifies the transportation department and a new ID card is sent to the school in 24-48 hours.

If my child is new to KCKPS, how do I get an ID Card?

The schools can contact transportation to request an ID card for new students.
